HOME FOR THE GOLDEN GAYS

Growing old is difficult. Growing old, queer, with limited economic security and few legal protections, doesn’t make it easier.

Founded in the 1970s by lawyer and activist Justo Justo, the Home for the Golden Gays is a non-profit organization in Manila that provides a safe haven and community for older LGBTQIA+ individuals. After Justo’s death in 2012, the community lost its home before eventually finding a new one together in 2018.

In the photo essay of the same name, London-based Filipina photographer Hannah Reyes Morales captures the joy found in ordinary acts of care: sharing a home, preparing for a performance, resting together after a long day. Her photographs remind us that joy isn’t the absence of hardship. It takes root wherever love is practiced.
