If Little Simz’s sixth studio album Lotus is like the flower itself, piercing through a place of darkness and murky water, searching for blue skies, Free, the fifth track on the album, is her arrival at the surface.
Here, love is not just an emotion. It is an act of liberation. When you practice the kind of love that she describes – the one that is unconditional and unflinching, the one that is where you forgive yourself, the one where you choose vulnerability over fear, the one where you commit to honesty – it can set you free. This love extends beyond ourselves and permeates to the ones we hold close. Lotus as a whole, and this track in particular, is a reminder that the path to freedom for all of us is, ultimately, love.
