ANA MN HONAK … ANA MN HONA
Palestinian author and poet Mahmoud Darwish's Ana Mn Honak … Ana Mn Hona is a poem of contradictions, the kind that surfaces when a person is torn between two worlds by forces beyond their control. Reflecting on identity and displacement, Darwish captures the uncertainty of existing between worlds with two names, two languages, uncertain even which tongue he dreams in. The feeling of not fully belonging to either runs through this powerful piece. Rather than resolving this tension, he embraces it, concluding that identity is not inherited but self-made, and that he is "two in one, like two wings of a swallow."
